How to Build Momentum for Your Work Year

Back to work already? Feel like the break went too quickly? You aren’t alone.

While some of us are eager to get back into what we paused on before the break, it’s not uncommon for some to need a little more momentum to get back into back to the working year…

Regardless of your current enthusiasm level, here’s a few tips I like to embrace as I start my working year:

1. Get Focused

Revisit the goals you set in your annual performance review (if you had one) - are they still relevant, what progress has been made (aligned with how far in your yearly review cycle you are currently at), how will you go about achieving them?

If you don’t have any goals identified, start thinking about what would you like to achieve this year at work and make a plan.

2. Grow

What would you like to learn or develop in this year? A new skill or technology? Perhaps this was discussed in your annual performance review, or has anything new recently sparked your curiosity or caught your attention? What would support you to develop in this area - opportunity to do practical work experience, or training, or finding a mentor?

Take the time to reflect and identify some actions about how you can achieve your desired growth.

3. Connect

Human connection is a basic need.

Have you reached out yet to your colleagues or professional network since the break to see how they are doing and to ask what they are excited about in 2025?

While there will be other things that will help you get into your year, these are some key foundations as a starting point to help set you up for a successful year ahead.

Have a great start to your year!
