I am growing (and prioritising)
It’s nice to be back in my home office today, fully focused, after a few weeks hiatus.
The hiatus was planned to be a magical two weeks away, but ended up extended out to nearly three weeks due to an unexpected (and not-magical) incident experienced by a family member early last week, but sometimes we are dealt with some unexpected deviations - and what I’ve learned from these is how I prioritise and respond to these deviations when they do arise. Important skills in life and work.
The first two weeks were certainly magical, filled with special events and quality time with family and many lifelong friends. So much love, fun, and special memories created. On the flip side, last week was about support, precision decision making, and prioritising what was really important. Life really is a rollercoaster at times.
What is clear to me is that I love my work, but I love my people more.
Why am I sharing all of this? For those who have read my previous posts, this year my word of the year I have chosen for myself is GROW.
As a reformed workaholic and perfectionist, I can see how I have recently become increasingly self-aware to gain an increased understanding of my work behaviours and patterns, and their impact on others (especially on my loved ones); and I have worked on creating a life that enables me to do work that has great outcomes and satisfaction of achievement, while ensuring I prioritise my loved ones, my health, and play - because without prioritising these, I’ve come to realise, what’s the point (albeit a bit late to game some might argue).
I don’t always get it right, but I am getting better at taking purposeful and timely action on non-work priorities. Such as the activities of recent weeks - whether they be happy or more challenging occasions. For me, I take this as progress and growth; and more importantly being where I want and need to be with my people - while still ensuring I uphold my commitments and high standard of outcomes to my clients.
The year of grow is perhaps giving me more insights and personal dividends than I initially expected, but I am definitely here for it.
