The Importance of Taking Breaks
This is not a photo of me signing off for the year from where I am right now - this was taken a few months ago when I was in London but I came across this photo the other day when I was doing my review of 2022 and I though I’d post it as it reminded me of a couple of important messages I wanted to share.
1. The importance of taking a break. Before going on this trip I was exhausted mentally and physically after what has been a busy and intense couple of years; and taking the time to recharge was essential for me both personally and professionally. Do know though dusting off the passport and jumping on an aeroplane to an exotic instagram worthy destination isn’t required, having some laptop-free and no-meetings time and exploring your neighbourhood can also recharge the batteries!
2. Creative thinking galore! The irony for me of taking a break is that it opens up my mind for clearer thinking where I get clarity on thoughts and decisions, it enhances my creativity (not in the artistic sense but from a business perspective because let me tell you I am no future Picasso!). Without exploring the research behind this I do wonder if it’s a result of the mind having more space by not having to focus on the day-to-day when on a break.
Needless to say I am about to take another little break until mid-January to recharge (at home with some long walks and good books) and I look forward to seeing what creative thinking occurs!
A big thank you to my clients I’ve had the privilege to work with this year. Congratulations on the progress you've made and all you’ve achieved. What an exciting time to work in HR as we navigate and strategise with the future of work.
I’m excited by what’s ahead in 2023 and I already can’t wait to get into it.
Best wishes for a restful break for those who take a break this time of year (even if it’s just a little bit of time away from the laptop in your own neighbourhood). If you can't take a break now I hope you can plan for one in 2023 as I've learnt myself this year how important and essential they are for our wellbeing.
I wish all a happy and successful 2023.
